King John Theme

Loyalty and Revenge
As is the case in numerous Shakespeare history plays,
The Life and Death of King John examines which
causes merit loyalty and which do not. Whether to
be faithful to one’s king and a patriot, faithful to a
greater good of country, or to preserve familial ties
at all costs lies at the heart of much of this play.
War
Against whom should the sword be taken up and why, The Life and Death of King John is a study in when or whether war should be waged. At issue is honor, pride, inheritance, and power, all of which ebb and flow as conditions on the battlefield change and leaders live and die, prevail and fail in the effort.
