Theseus is the Duke of Athens, a mighty warrior who has recently
conquered the Amazons and is supposed to be marrying their Queen, Hippolyta.
Pirithous is Theseus’s dearest friend, and has a great deal of
influence on him.
Artesius [mute role] is an Athenian soldier, particularly good at
getting the enemy to come to where Theseus wants them to be.
Palamon is a nephew of the tyrant Creon of Thebes.
Arcite is a nephew of the tyrant Creon of Thebes.
Valerius is a noble Theban who comes to bring Palamon and Arcite to
Creon when the latter learns of Theseus’s attack.
A Herald is doing his job
wandering the field of battle once it is over to identify the dead when he
finds the gravely-wounded Arcite and Palamon there. He informs Theseus of their
identity.
A Jailer (also called Keeper)
is in charge of Theseus’s prison for high-ranking captives.
The Wooer is in love with the
Jailer’s Daughter, and hopes to marry her.
A Doctor is consulted by the
Jailer and his friends in the hopes of curing the Jailer’s Daughter’s
madness.
Bavian is one of the morris dancers, disguised as a creature with
a long tail and a long tool.
A Gentleman of Athens comes
to tell Emilia that Arcite and Palamon have arrived for their duel.
Nell is a freckled country wench and one of the morris dancers.
She does not think that she and her fellow wenches need Gerrold’s instructions.
Timothy the Taborer plays the tabor in the morris dancer, giving the
beat.
Gerrold is a schoolmaster, who organizes the morris dance to
entertain Theseus.
Hymen is the god of marriage, and leads Theseus and Hippolyta’s
wedding procession.
Hippolyta is the Queen of the Amazons, now marrying Theseus.
Emilia is Hippolyta’s sister. Like her an Amazon, she has fought
in battles with her sister.
A Servant attends Emilia as
she sits out the tournament between Palamon and Arcite, and from time to time
reports to her how the fight is going.
The First Messenger comes
from Arcite, Palamon, and their followers to let Theseus know they have
arrived.
The Second Messenger rushes
in to tell the Jailer that he is late for the battle between Palamon and
Arcite.
The First Queen is the widow
of King Capaneus, who died fighting Creon of Thebes.
The Second Queen is the widow
of a king who died fighting Creon of Thebes.

The Jailer’s Daughter is 18,
immature, romantic, and more than ready to lose her virginity.
Jailer’s First Friend witnessed Theseus finding Palamon, and comes to tell the
Jailer of it. He is disturbed by the Jailer’s Daughter’s madness, and pities
her for it.
Jailer’s Second Friend hears Palamon clear the Jailer of any responsibility in his
escape, and also how Palamon obtained a pardon for the Jailer’s Daughter along
with her father.
The Jailer’s Brother sees his
niece running madly towards the city and stops her.
A Waiting Woman attends on Emilia.
She is a good seamstress and not shy about her skill.
A Boy leads the wedding
procession, singing an epithalamium while strewing flowers.
First Country Folk is one of the morris dancers, who seeks to reassure Gerrold
that they will not fail him.
Second Country Folk is one of the morris dancers, who has an eye for the
ladies.
Third Country Folk is one of the morris dancers, who convinces the others of
the need for rehearsal.
Fourth Country Folk is one of the morris dancers.
The First Knight Attending
Palamon has a reddish face, with thick, blonde, curly hair.
The Second Knight Attending
Palamon is a small man with well-muscled arms.
The Third Knight attending
Palamon seems quite unfazed at having lost the battle and having to have his head chopped off, and merely wants to know who
will go first.
Friz [mute role] is one of the country wenches dancing in the
morris.
Maudline [mute role] is one of the country wenches dancing in the
morris.
Luce [mute role] is one of the country wenches dancing in the
morris. She is short, with noticeably white legs.
Barbary [mute role] is a curvy country wench dancing in the morris.
An Executioner [mute role]
brings Palamon and his three companions to the block, and is about to chop off
their heads when they are reprived.
First Knight Attending Arcite [mute role] is a dark-skinned man with long black hair and
broad shoulders, armed with a sword. He attends and aids at Arcite’s prayer to
Mars as well as at the battle.
Second Knight Attending Arcite [mute role] attends and aids at Arcite’s prayer to Mars as well
as at the battle.
Third Knight Attending Arcite [mute role] attends and aids at Arcite’s prayer to Mars as
well as at the battle.
